Surface Coal Mine Soils: Evidence for Chronosequence Development

نویسندگان

چکیده

Anthropogenic changes to soil properties and development can dominate systems, particularly in coal mining-impacted landscapes of the Appalachian region United States. Historical mining operations deposited spoils which are developing into mine soils chronosequences, allowing for a correlation between emplacement age rates change properties. The study site was Huff Run Watershed (Mineral City, OH, USA) with series eleven spoil piles that were over 30-year time period. Surface analyzed bulk density, loss on ignition (LOI) as proxy organic matter, particle size, mineralogical (by X-ray diffraction) elemental fluorescence) compositions. following linear trends observed across transect from older younger soils: density increased 1.0 cm−3 1.5 g cm−3; LOI decreased ~20% 5%; content sand-sized particles quartz ~50% 30% 50% 25%, respectively, corresponding increase contribution clay mineral ~25% 60%; Fe other trace metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, Te) concentration, while Al, Mg, K concentration. These likely result of: (1) matter accumulation vegetation becomes more abundant time; (2) transport clays out recently emplaced waste; (3) oxidative dissolution primary sulfides releasing followed by re-precipitation secondary Fe-phases metal sequestration. findings presented here provide insight future behavior these materials potentially be used assess inferred previously unexamined wider geographic area. results also inform decisions related reclamation activities ecosystem restoration.

High-tech coal mine canary.

High-tech coal mine canary One of coal mining's earliest systems for warning of the presence of methane gas, the canary in the coal mine, though low-tech, was extremely effective and rather easy to read: if the bird died, miners had to get out of the shaft. Today, the search for means to monitor for signs of danger continues. At an annual checkup, one could be given a whole battery of tests, ea...

Canaries in the coal mine.

Up until 30 years ago, coalminers relied on canaries as warning systems against harmful gases and pollutants underground. The miners listened for birdsong and if the birds fell silent, then they knew there was danger to their health and to take action. Today we have much more sophisticated information and reporting on the quality of air. We know precisely the levels and composition of pollutant...

Establishment, Growth, and Yield Potential of the Perennial Grass Miscanthus × Giganteus on Degraded Coal Mine Soils

Miscanthus × giganteus is a giant C4 grass native to Asia. Unlike most C4 species, it is relatively cold tolerant due to adaptations across a wide range of altitudes. These grasses are characterized by high productivity and low input requirements, making them excellent candidates for bioenergy feedstock production. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential for growing Miscanthus on...
